Curating Space
July marks 3 years since I last went to the shops or for a walk. I’m housebound with moderate/severe ME/CFS and any exertion can make me sicker. Living alone and rarely leaving the house means that my entire life occurs within these walls. This collection documents my space and the objects I own; many have been lovingly rendered multiple times through painting, photography, digital art and embroidery. For Creating Space as well as stitching new and old images, I have reworked past paintings to present all the different facets of my creative home life, with none of the mess.
The type of art you make when you’re chronically ill has to be modified. Two years ago, I wouldn’t have thought I’d be making art on an iPad (I was a painter and a screen printer!) but on good days it’s physically doable for me, as it uses far less energy than traditional media.
You can’t paint big expressive paintings and you can’t screen-print or spray paint, you can’t sculpt with ceramics, and you can’t perform performance art, unless it’s from bed.
.I’ve had to work small, and I’ve had to paint using an iPad. It’s changed the way I work and I’ve adopted techniques like stitching that I can do from the couch. As I’m no longer able to paint a whole painting, I have printed artworks on fabric and added just a bit of paint, to save energy.
Creating is a privilege of energy; you can’t create if you’re struggling to get your basic needs met.
With ME/CFS, you get punished for every exertion, so you’ve got to pace. If you’re too sick, like the 25% of people with severe ME/CFS, you can’t create at all. There’s approximately 240 million of us living with an illness that most doctors know nothing about. Up to 1 in 29 people have ME/CFS so you know many people with it, but most are still undiagnosed.
The illness shapes the artist, the subject matter, and techniques.
You need the right balance.
