What is FND?
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition that impacts the way the nervous system and the brain interact with each other.
The nervous system and brain’s networking system functions differently causing a wide variety of symptoms such as weakness, tremor, walking and gait issues, tics and involuntary movement, seizures, cognitive issues, speech and swallowing, dystonia, visual disturbance, fatigue and sensitivity to light, noise and smell.
These issues arise due to the brain’s pathways acting differently. The brain is structurally ok however the pathways glitch; they over function or under function and the nervous system responds to these glitches by states of hyperarousal which cause movement and cognitive difficulties.
Functional Neurological Disorder can cause day to day symptoms which create immense difficulties within an individual’s life. Some symptoms say a brief ‘hello’ during the day and some stay as an annoying guest. FND is distinct yet it affects everybody differently. No two people share the same set of symptoms and experiences, which makes it unique to each individual that lives with FND.
