SEIZURES – NON EPILEPTIC ATTACK DISORDER
People with FND can have seizures. They have many names, Non- Epileptic Attack Disorder, psychogenic seizures, dissociative attacks. Unfortunately, Functional Seizures seem to have the most judgement and bias attached to them. Doctors often say that the person is pretending and this leaves the individual feeling dismissed and unbelieved.
Functional Seizures don’t have the same process of Epileptic Seizures, the brain activity is normal however the seizure still presents a very difficult and horrific time for the person. They can look like whole body shaking, void outs where the person is on the floor almost locked in unable to respond but hear their surroundings or people have no recollection of the event. I want to reiterate these seizures are very real – you are not making it up, be kind to yourself.
Functional Seizures are taxing physically and can create immense fatigue after. Rest is very important after a seizure. Finding a quiet space with no noise and low lighting is great for the recovery period.
Seizures can be triggered by sudden noises, smells, movements and times of stress. It is important to start to notice just before a seizure what environmentally was going on, or what was your mental state at the time. Tracking potential triggers helps you prepare and be aware to get down safely to a safe spot.
Some people negate seizures by distraction, if it works for them – like reciting the six times tables or sing a song others do breathing exercises – but for others, they can instil feelings of anxiety. Slowly find what works for you. You are a unique human being with likes and dislikes.
