VISUAL DISTURBANCES

Visual disturbances can be frightening. They can be both functional or dissociative in nature. People with FND report eyes blurring in and out without being able to control it this can be due to ‘convergence spasm’, where one eye turns inwards more. Or your eyes need a bit of a break so they go in and out of focus. For some this causes distress for others it is a little break for the eyes.

People also report a sensitivity to bright lights or natural light. People can have big chunks of vision loss which looks like black or white spots within the field of vision and in rare cases functional blindness can occur. The eyes are healthy and connecting correctly however some people cannot see.

People can also experience visual snow which looks like a static or fuzziness within the air. Normally this is blocked out by our brains, however with FND and Migraine this can happen.

Eye exercises are good, however they should be done while sitting as one can become dizzy during and after doing them.

One exercise it to extend your arm out and put your index finger out and trace an imaginary 8 slowly while using your eyes to track your finger.
