COGNITIVE AND SPEECH ISSUES
You are mid conversation and suddenly your brain feels a bit funny, conversations feel harder to focus on and words make no sense and you try to speak but words come out jumbled and your speech starts to slur. This is a very common experience for those living with FND, it takes a big cognitive load to communicate. Lights and noise, other chatter around from the environment you are in whether it be in a Cafe with the loud hum of a thousand words, to someone talking while a television is on, to two people talking at the same time. All of these things impact our ability to process information.
This is due to the brains act of processing information changing due to FND. People with FND can sometimes think am I losing my mind? Do I have dementia or a brain injury? Unfortunately, cognition can be affected by FND, memory and processing is impaired and speech and word finding can become difficult.
These symptoms impair an individual to be able to communicate and can leave the person feeling frustrated.
For example, you are cooking and need butter and ask your partner for the butter but you cannot find the word so you say “I need the wet yellow”, while funny at times it can be scary.
We can describe something in so many ways, and this reflects back to creative writing. We can describe an object in ways that another person will understand even when our speech and cognition is low.
