Slow Looking
Spend time with the textile and poem together.
Exercise 1:
• Look at the textile for 2 minutes
• Then read the poem slowly
• Return to the textile
Shift your focus:
• First: texture and surface
• Second: variation (tight/loose, dense/open)
• Third: where the work changes
Consider the process:
• Read the panels detailing various ways chronic sickness informed the 14 month stitching process
• Reconsider the poem and the textile in the context these processes
Prompts:
• Where do you see effort or labour?
• What feels uneven – and why might that matter?
• What feels “below the surface”?
